About this Programme

Noise complaints are among the most common environmental issues facing local authorities and developers. Knowing how to measure noise correctly — and how to present those measurements in a legally defensible way — is a distinct technical skill.

Course scope

The programme covers sound level meter operation, measurement positioning, background noise surveys, and the specific metrics used in Irish and EU noise regulations including Lden and Lnight. Vibration monitoring for construction sites and transport corridors is covered in the second half of the course.

Regulatory framework

Irish planning guidelines, the Environmental Noise Directive, and EPA guidance documents are referenced throughout. You will work through assessment scenarios drawn from wind energy, road traffic, and industrial planning applications.

  • Sound level meter types and Class 1 versus Class 2 instruments
  • Measurement uncertainty and its effect on compliance decisions
  • Background noise surveys and rating level calculations
  • Vibration measurement using BS 6472 and BS 7385
  • Noise mapping and contour generation basics

The course is delivered over five weeks. Each week includes two pre-recorded lectures, one live workshop, and a set of worked examples using real measurement data.

Programme Structure
  1. Week 1 — Acoustics fundamentals

    Sound pressure, frequency weighting, and decibel arithmetic. Overview of measurement metrics used in environmental practice.
  2. Week 2 — Field measurement techniques

    Instrument setup, measurement positions, meteorological corrections, and documentation requirements.
  3. Week 3 — Regulatory assessment

    Applying Lden and Lnight metrics. Working through road traffic and industrial noise assessment scenarios.
  4. Week 4 — Vibration monitoring

    Vibration transducers, frequency analysis, and assessment against BS 6472 human response criteria and BS 7385 building damage thresholds.
  5. Week 5 — Reporting and noise mapping

    Structuring technical reports for planning submissions. Introduction to noise mapping software and contour interpretation.
