Water Quality Field Monitoring
A structured programme covering field methodology, sensor calibration, and data interpretation for environmental monitoring professionals.
Getting reliable water quality data starts before you reach the riverbank. Sampling design, equipment checks, and chain-of-custody procedures all affect whether your results hold up under scrutiny.
Course focus
This programme is built around field practicality. You will learn to use multiparameter sondes, collect grab and composite samples correctly, and prepare samples for laboratory analysis without introducing contamination. Case studies draw from Irish river basin management and coastal bathing water assessments.
Key measurement parameters
The course covers dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, turbidity, and nutrient indicators including nitrates and phosphates. We also look at biological indicators — macroinvertebrate surveys and their role in WFD classification.
- Field equipment setup and pre-deployment checks
- Grab sampling versus automated sampling trade-offs
- Preservation and transport of water samples
- Interpreting sonde data and identifying fouling artefacts
- WFD ecological status classification basics
Participants receive a field log template and a calibration checklist developed for Irish conditions. The course includes one full-day virtual field exercise using video footage from real monitoring sites, with instructor-led analysis of the collected data.
Assessment
A short written report on a provided dataset is submitted at the end of week four. Feedback is returned within five working days.

Week 2 — In-situ instrumentation
Multiparameter sondes, optical sensors, and data loggers. Calibration procedures and common fouling issues. -
Week 3 — Sampling techniques
Grab, composite, and passive sampling methods. Chain-of-custody documentation and preservation requirements. -
Week 4 — Biological and chemical indicators
Nutrient analysis basics, macroinvertebrate surveys, and WFD ecological status classification. -
Week 5 — Data interpretation workshop
Group analysis of a real Irish river dataset. Identifying trends, anomalies, and reporting conclusions.
